Women and Waves: The History of Female Surfing in the Canary Islands

Pioneers of the lineup: Inspiration for the new generation

The ocean doesn't understand gender, only respect and passion. On the occasion of March 8th, at Oceanside we want to pay tribute to all the women who have defied the currents and made surfing their lifestyle in Gran Canaria.

Decades ago, the lineup (the area where you wait for waves) was a predominantly male territory. However, the determination of local female surfers at beaches like Las Canteras and El Confital paved the way. Today, it is a source of pride to see the peak full of diversity, talent, and sisterhood.

The Oceanside & Roxy Alliance: Empowerment in the water

We firmly believe in creating safe and motivating spaces for more women to take the leap. That's why we are an official Quiksilver & Roxy school. We share with Roxy the vision of empowering women through board sports, celebrating the strength, beauty, and freedom that the sea provides.

  • Community: Learning to surf surrounded by other women creates an incredibly supportive environment. Wipeouts hurt less when shared with laughter.
  • Mental and Physical Health: Paddling tones the body, but the real magic happens in the mind. The sea washes away the week's stress and recharges your energy.
  • Role Models: Our female instructors are the best example that with technique and perseverance, no wave is impossible.

It's never too late to write your own story in the water. Join our Quiksilver & Roxy Surf School and discover what you are capable of.
