How to Properly Attach Your Surfboard Leash

Why Is It Important to Attach the Leash Properly?

Attaching the leash to your surfboard may seem like a simple gesture, but it is essential for your safety and that of those around you in the water. An incorrectly fastened leash can result in losing your board, collisions, and dangerous situations. In this article, you will find a step-by-step guide to correctly attaching the leash, just as we teach in our classes at Oceanside, official surf school in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Step 1: Thread the Cord Through the Board Plug

Start by inserting the knotted rope cord through the plug located at the tail of the board. This cord acts as a bridge between the plug and the leash itself, preventing the velcro from putting direct pressure on the board.

In our surf lessons for all levels, we teach from day one how to prepare the equipment safely and independently.

Step 2: Secure the Thin End of the Leash

Once the cord is through the plug, insert the thin end of the leash through the folded cord loop. Then, fasten the velcro strap back onto itself, making sure the closure is tight and the tail of the board is protected. It is very important to check that there are no loose ends or misaligned velcro, as they could come undone in the middle of a wave.

If you need to rent surf equipment, at Oceanside we offer all kinds of boards for all levels.

Step 3: Attach the Thick End to Your Ankle

Finally, secure the thick end of the leash to your ankle—typically your back foot—making sure it fits snugly but not too tight. The velcro system should wrap completely around your ankle, with the cord facing outward from the leg.

In our surf camps and surf houses, we support you in every session to help you improve your technique both in and out of the water.

A Detail That Makes All the Difference

A properly attached leash not only helps prevent accidents, but also prolongs your board’s lifespan and enhances your experience in the water. At Oceanside, we see these small details as essential to a safe and mindful surfing practice.
