Fear in the Ocean: Psychology and Managing Panic in Surfing

Tips to overcome anxiety and surf safely in Las Canteras

Your heart beats fast, you see a big set approaching the horizon of Las Canteras and you freeze. Don't worry, it happens to all of us, from beginners to pros. Fear is natural, but panic is dangerous.

At Oceanside, our instructors don't just teach you technique; they teach you to read and respect the sea so you feel safe. Learning to manage your mind is just as important as improving your take-off.

Fear vs. Respect

Fear is a necessary warning signal. The problem arises when it turns into panic and makes you take bad decisions.
The best tool against fear is information. When you surf with the Oceanside School, you are under the supervision of local experts who know every current and sandbank at La Cícer. Transform fear into respect by letting yourself be guided.

The Washing Machine (The Wipeout)

Falling is part of the game. When a wave rolls you over, the feeling of disorientation is what scares people the most. Follow these steps to maintain control:

  1. Protect your head: Always cover your head with your arms when falling. It's safety rule number 1.
  2. Curl into a ball: Don't fight the turbulence. Let the foam move you; you will use less oxygen.
  3. Count to 5: Most wipeouts last less than 5 seconds, even if they seem like an eternity. Stay calm, the air will push you to the surface.

Breathing and Confidence

If you feel overwhelmed in the lineup, sit on your board and look towards the shore (where our school is). Take deep breaths through your nose, expanding your stomach.

Remember: you are never alone in the water. Learning at a certified school in Gran Canaria is the guarantee that there will always be an expert eye watching over your safety while you focus on enjoying.
