Wind Swell or Groundswell?

Discover the Differences to Enhance Your Surfing Experience

When you enter the water, it’s essential to understand the characteristics of the sea in which you’ll be surfing. Two common terms you’ll often hear are “wind swell” and “groundswell.” These types of waves have different origins and characteristics, which directly influence how the waves behave and how you should prepare to surf them.

Wind Swell: Local and Unstable Waves

Wind swell is a type of wave generated by local winds. It’s more common during the summer months and is the kind of sea most surfers encounter in their daily sessions. The wind near the coast causes irregular, choppy waves with a short period between sets (around 6 to 7 seconds). In these conditions, wave sets tend to break in quick succession, which can make surfing more challenging if you're not well prepared.

Characteristics of Wind Swell

A key feature of wind swell is that the waves are generally more chaotic—also known as “choppy.” Due to this irregular wave pattern, surfers must be quick to adapt and make decisions on the spot. While conditions aren’t always ideal, with experience, these sessions can be perfect for practicing and improving your skills.

Groundswell: Bigger and More Organized Waves

Groundswell, on the other hand, has a different origin. These waves are generated by distant storms or strong winds far from the coast, and they travel long distances across the ocean before reaching the shore. Groundswell is more frequent in the autumn and winter months, when atmospheric conditions change and waves become larger and more organized. These waves typically have a longer period (between 12 and 15 seconds), which gives them a smoother and more continuous motion.

Advantages of Groundswell

One of the major advantages of groundswell is the organization of the waves. Wave sets are generally larger, with intervals of 5 to 10 minutes between them, allowing enough time to rest or position yourself better. In addition, local wind is usually mild or absent, which helps the waves arrive clean and powerful—ideal for more experienced surfers or those seeking greater challenges.
